Project Topics
I am writing this to share with you the project topics that I recently learned about in my networking and telecommunications program at Okanagan College. Each topic provided a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience that has prepared me for a successful career in the industry.
Physical Cabling:
Learned about different types of cabling and their uses in networking (e.g. copper, fiber optic)
Understood the importance of proper cable management and labeling
Gained hands-on experience in terminating and testing cables
Learned about industry standards and best practices for cabling installations
Routing and Switching (Cisco):
Learned about Cisco IOS and its command-line interface
Gained an understanding of routing protocols such as OSPF and EIGRP
Learned about VLANs, VLAN tagging, and VLAN trunking
Understood the configuration of access control lists (ACLs) and network address translation (NAT)
Scripting:
Learned about different scripting languages such as Python and Bash
Gained an understanding of basic programming concepts such as loops and variables
Learned how to automate repetitive tasks and increase efficiency in network administration
Understood how to use APIs to interact with network devices
Server Administration:
Learned about different server hardware and its components
Gained an understanding of server operating systems such as Windows and Linux
Learned about file systems and disk partitioning
Understood the principles of backup and recovery, as well as disaster recovery procedures.
Security:
Learned about different types of security threats such as malware and phishing
Understood the importance of security protocols such as HTTPS and SSH
Learned about firewalls and their role in network security
Gained an understanding of intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS)
Cyber Security:
Learned about different types of cyber attacks and how to prevent them
Understood the importance of security protocols such as HTTPS and SSH
Learned about firewalls and their role in network security

Server Administration:
Learned about different server hardware and its components
Gained an understanding of server operating systems such as Windows and Linux
Learned about file systems and disk partitioning

Virtualization:
Learned about different types of virtualization such as VMware and Hyper-V
Understood the benefits of virtualization such as server consolidation and disaster recovery
Gained hands-on experience in creating and managing virtual machines
Learned about different types of storage for virtualization
Telecommunications:
Learned about different types of telephone systems and their features
Understood the principles of radio frequency theory and satellite communications
Gained an understanding of telecommunications regulations and industry standards
Linux:
Learned about the Linux operating system and its command-line interface
Gained an understanding of Linux file systems and disk partitioning
Learned about Linux security and user management
Understood the principles of Linux networking
I hope this gives you a better understanding of the topics I learned about in my program. I am confident that the knowledge and hands-on experience I gained will serve me well in my future career in networking and telecommunications.
